Description
Please examine photos. They are THIS item and are part of the description. I do not use stock photos or photos of other people’s items. This is a really nice survivor of the Hotel Platterhof in Obersalzburg made by the Gebruder Hepp manufacture in Pforzheim. The property was initially known as the Pension Moritz of Mauritia "Moritz" Mayer sometime after her acquisition in 1877. Moritz was the inspiration for a character named Judith Platter in a Richard Voss novel "Two People" published in 1911 and resulting in two films, 1930 and 1952. Moritz died in 1897. The property was managed by her sister until 1919. In the early 1920s Bruno Buchner, a cyclist and aviator, leased the Pension with his wife. In ads they claimed Judith Platter had lived there. In 1925 "Hugo Wolf" was in residence dictating Mein Kampf. Buchner acquired the property outright in 1928 and at some point changed the name to the Platterhof. In 1935-36 Buchner was persuaded, reluctantly, to sell Platterhof to Martin Bormann.
The logo for the Platterhof, deeply incised on various Hotel items, as here, bears a striking resemblace to Julie Andrews' portrayal of Maria Von Trap, including the ribboned hat, the striped dress and the Alps to right and left. She holds edelweiss in her hands, with more below. This is undoubtedly a depiction of Voss' fictional character Judith Platter. The logo was likely created by Buchner and presumably used between the late 1920s and the early 1940s.
I have read stories on-line of "crates" filled with deeply tarnished Platterhoff hotelware. Except for a few items on Worthpoint there really is not that much out there. This tray is very nice with just a bit of table friction to the plating on the bottom. It is 11 1/2
